The World of a Penguin

I am attending the SpringOne conference in Amsterdam. The conference will start any minute now. The program looks very interesting. the morning here in Amsterdam was a bit cloudy but the sun is now shining. For you that did not know that; you can be full on one pancake. I just eat one with mushrooms and cheese.

For two days, I have attended a conference about using open source in the public sector in Sweden. I held a talk about developing GIS-applications using open source, using applications such as PostgreSQL with postgis, geoserver etc. There were several talks that included reports about the state in the other nordic country. Very simple is the political system in Denmark promoting open standards, Norway and Island promoting use of Open Source. In Finland and Sweden are the politicans doing nothing. One keynote was held by the swedish minister for Infra structure. The speach was a huge disapointment with no indication at all where they want to go. She were not even willing to answer questions. The sky is not totally black. The city of Sundsvall told that they had developed a system for communication between school and parents released it open source and then purchased the maintanence in competition between suppliers. I continued the day by listening to a re-run of Ivar Jacobssons talk, which where I missed yesterday due to the room got full before I got there. It was the most interesting talk at the conferens, even if it wasn't about Java. As you may know Dr. Jacobsson is one of the three gurus behind RUP . He admitted during the talk that RUP and Objectory were too heavy and why throw out everything if only one part of your process fail. Instead he have broken down processes into eight practices . Practices are parts of processes which more or less all processes include in different forms. Example of practices are teams or architecture. There are not only one way to implement a team, so there will be several practices that describes teams and you should select the one that fits your organization. Me and my wife have been traveling for the last two weeks. First visited we my wifes sister in London, UK. Then we took the channel train to Paris, France. We visited all the famous buildings. From Paris took we the TGV-train to Strasbourg. We rented a car in Strasbourg and drew around in Alsace and bought wine. As the finally of the trip we took the night train home. Unfortunately we were hit by a cold some where in France so I may write some more another time.
